“I Really Want A Female Coach”

I am on the cusp of a very new experience as a coach. I will be coaching and mentoring my first junior female player, empowering her to achieve her goals and aspirations. During our first conversation she said “I really want a female coach” and “I feel like you’ll be an amazing coach for me”. I was both surprised and excited to hear that. Nonetheless, I will be using the same process as I do with all of my new players. It goes a little something like this:

  1. Connect
  2. Construct a Path
  3. Build Trust
  4. Instruct and Reinforce
  5. Compete and Evaluate

In my opinion, gone are the days where your credibility as a coach is purely based on your instruction and knowledge. I feel it is necessary now, more than ever, to form a connection with your player, have them visualise a path/journey that you will embark on together, form trust and then begin to coach. I’ve had some awesome outcomes by using this teaching style and I am sticking to it 🙂
